How is the air quality in your home ? Maybe it’s probably time to clean your air ducts ?
If you’re like most home owners, you give little thought to the ductwork that conveys warm and cool air from your furnace. Then you see advertisements or get a phone call from a duct cleaning firm and you may begin to wonder if you should respond.
When to clean your air ducts ?
- Dust accumulated in air ducts – it is normal for some amount of dust to accumulate in air ducts and this argues against routine cleaning on an annual basis, as is recommended for the working components of your home’s HVAC system.
- Excessive amounts of dust on registers and grilles – yet it stands to reason that the older your system is, the more likely it is that dust will build up to levels that may be detrimental to your family’s health. You may see excessive amounts of dust build-up on registers and grilles, which could be a signal it’s time to get your ducts cleaned out.
- If someone in your household suffers from recurrent allergies, unexplained illnesses or sniffling, it could be related to contaminants in your indoor environment. These could be caused by pollen, mites and/ or mold growth in your ductwork. Sometimes mold is visible on grilles and registers, a sure sign you need your ducts cleaned.
- Another signal might be the presence of musty odors in your house – or worse. Some ducts can get infested with dead rodents or insects and the nasty smell might be hard to trace.
Conditions in every home are different and not everyone stands to benefit from air duct cleaning, however, there are cases where cleaning the HVAC unit and ductwork could be useful.
